A bit of History
Café Tortoni was opened in 1858 by a French immigrant called Touan, who named his store after a coffee shop in Paris where the elites used to meet. Towards the end of the century, the café came under the management of Don Curutchet, who made sure the café achieved all its splendor. In 1918 the characteristic iron façade, designed by the Norwegian architect Alejandro Christophersen, was installed; and by 1926 it had already become one of the most popular venues among famous artists. Personalities such as Jorge Luis Borges, Carlos Gardel, Luigi Pirandello, Federico García Lorca, Julio Cortázar and Carlos Gardel used to sit at its wooden and marble tables to discuss arts and politics. They certainly brought their fame to the café.
Nowadays, the Café Tortoni hosts jazz and tango shows. Check the shows schedule here!
