The Cloisters Museum is a little-known gem in the heart of the Recoleta neighborhood. It’s located in a very touristy area but is not well-known itself.
The Cloisters Museum is the main nucleus of what used to be the convent of the Franciscan friars. The building was constructed in the 18th century, and we’ll tell you more about it so you can enjoy your visit.
The museum opens its doors on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2 pm to 5 pm, and also on the first Sundays of the month from 3 pm to 6 pm.
The museum offers guided tours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 4 pm. You can also contact the museum if you wish to arrange a guided tour for large groups or schools.
What the Museum is Like
The Cloisters Museum consists of three galleries parallel to the church nave, preserved in their original state.
This space was occupied by the Recoletos Franciscan Friars since 1715, who came from Spain and founded the convent that would later give its name to the Recoleta neighborhood.
In 1997, it was decided to open its doors to the public as a museum. Inside, you’ll enjoy works from the 18th century, sacred art, important relics, furniture, silverware, and liturgical vestments. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the life of the Recoletos monks and the Recoleta neighborhood during that time.
During your visit, you’ll be able to appreciate unique views of the Recoleta Cemetery and the basilica nave from the choir.
Location of the Museum
The Cloisters Museum is located next to the Church of the Pillar and the Cemetery, in the Recoleta neighborhood.
