Originally named “El Ateneo Grand Splendid”, El Ateneo Bookstore is a very famous bookshop located in the neighborhood of Recoleta and it is considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world.

It is well known for its uniqueness and splendor that reminds the visitors of the old days when El Ateneo was a theater.
In the venue the most important tango singers and musicians used to perform. In fact, some people say that in one of the top floors of the building, the famous singer, Carlos Gardel, learnt a technique to amplify his voice.
Due to financial problems, the theatre had to close and after a long time it reopened to host this bookworm’s paradise.
Inside, you will find comfortable seats to enjoy any book and there is even a nice café where the stage used to be.
